Fox at the Pool Party
The backyard shimmered with that specific kind of summer heat that makes everything feel like a dream—or maybe a nightmare, depending on which side of the social ladder you were standing. Maya stood by the gate, clutching her towel like a shield, while inside, Jessica's pool party raged without her.
"You coming in or what?" Leo called from the patio. He was already shirtless, dripping wet, grinning like he knew something she didn't. Which was exactly the problem.
"I'm good!" Maya yelled back. "Just, you know. Taking it in."
**Bull**. Complete bull. The truth sat heavy in her stomach like a stone: she was terrified. The pool wasn't just water—it was a stage, and every dip, every dive, every splash was a performance. At sixteen, apparently even swimming required social strategy.
Inside the fence, the popular crowd clustered around the deep end. Jason was telling some story, arms waving, voice booming. Maya caught the words "then I decked it" and "totally wrecked" and wondered if anyone actually believed him. Probably. They always did.
"Hey, fox." Chloe slid up beside her, soda in hand. "You gonna stand there all night or actually join the party?"
Maya flinched at the nickname—a reference to her red hair and the way she "slyly" avoided social confrontations. "Not really feeling it today."
"Yeah, right." Chloe's eyes narrowed. "You know what your problem is? You think everyone's watching you. They're not. They're too busy worrying about themselves."
Before Maya could respond, a splash erupted from the deep end. Jason, mid-story, had dramatically demonstrated something with his entire body. Water sprayed everywhere. People laughed.
"See?" Chloe nudged her. "Nobody cares. Just jump in already."
The thing about Chloe was that she was always right, which was almost more annoying than being wrong. Maya's heart pounded against her ribs. What was the worst thing that could happen? They'd see her in a swimsuit? They'd... what? Judge her swimming technique? At sixteen, this felt like life or death.
"Fine," Maya muttered, dropping her towel on the lounge chair. "But if anyone laughs, I'm blaming you."
"Deal." Chloe grinned, sly as ever. "Now go show them how it's done."
The water was colder than expected—a shock that woke her up, cleared her head. She surfaced, sputtering, to find Jason mid-sentence, completely ignoring her entrance. Nobody stared. Nobody pointed. They were all just... existing. Being awkward teenagers in a pool, together.
From across the water, Chloe caught her eye and raised her soda in salute. Maya treaded water, floating in the middle of everything and nothing, and finally—finally—let herself breathe.
The night stretched ahead, full of possibilities she couldn't see yet. But for the first time all summer, she was actually looking forward to finding out.
