Fox at the Pool Party

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her solo cup like it was a lifeline. The July heat was already melting her makeup, but that wasn't why she felt like she might throw up. It was the pool party — her first one since moving to this gated community where everyone seemed to know everyone else since kindergarten.

"Hey, you're Maya, right? The new girl?"

She turned to find a girl with messy waves and a smile that seemed genuinely interested. "Yeah."

"I'm Riley. You look like you'd rather be anywhere else. No offense."

Maya actually laughed. "None taken. I feel like a zombie today. College tours all week, my mom's been... a lot."

"Been there," Riley said, then pointed toward the backyard fence. "There's a fox that lives back there. Comes out around dusk. We call him Fernando. He's kind of the community mascot."

A fox. That was random enough to be interesting.

"You want papaya?" Riley asked, gesturing toward a fruit platter. "My mom's obsessed with hosting 'fancy' parties."

"Sure," Maya said, because why not?

They ended up sitting on the edge of the pool, feet in the water, talking about everything and nothing. Riley had this way of making everything feel like an inside joke. The papaya was actually good. The fox — Fernando — did make an appearance, trotting along the fence line like he owned the place.

"So," Riley said, "some of us are playing padel tomorrow. You should come."

"Padel? Isn't that like tennis but... smaller?"

Riley grinned. "Exactly. And I'm terrible at it, which makes it fun."

The sun was setting now, turning the pool water gold. For the first time since moving here, Maya didn't feel like the new girl. She felt like someone who might actually belong here.

"I'm in," she said.

"Awesome," Riley said. "Oh, and Maya?"

"Yeah?"

"Glad you came. Even if you did look like a zombie at first."

Maya laughed, and it wasn't forced. Sometimes the best things happen when you're too tired to be nervous anyway.
