Fox at the Pool Party
Maya's stomach did flip-flops as she stood at the edge of the in-ground pool, clutching her solo cup like it was a lifeline. This was it—her first real high school party, and she was currently wearing a one-piece swimsuit while everyone else looked like they'd stepped out of a TikTok fashion haul.
"Hey, you gonna stand there all night or actually get in?"
Maya turned to see Kyle—aka The Fox, because apparently that's what everyone called the soccer captain with the messy brown hair and effortless grin. He was already waist-deep in the water, droplets sliding down his chest like he was in some coming-of-age movie that Maya definitely wasn't the main character of.
"I'm thinking about it," she managed, her voice cracking slightly. Smooth.
Before Kyle could respond, someone screamed from inside the house. Everyone turned as Jenna burst through the sliding glass doors, holding something orange and dripping.
"Who brought a PAPAYA?!" she yelled, and Maya's face heated up. Of course. Her mom had insisted she bring something 'exotic and impressive' instead of chips.
"That would be mine," Maya said, already planning her fake illness that would require immediate departure.
But then Kyle laughed—not mean, but actually amused. "Dude, a papaya? That's actually random as hell. I love it."
The next thing Maya knew, she was in the pool (okay, she was pushed, but whatever), floating on her back while Kyle and three others tried to figure out how to cut open the papaya poolside. The water felt like acceptance, like maybe she didn't have to perform being cool. She could just be Maya, the girl who brought tropical fruit to a rager.
Later, when they'd all failed spectacularly at opening it and ended up just scooping out the middle with plastic spoons, Maya found herself sitting pool-edge with Kyle, their legs dangling in the water.
"You know," he said, licking papaya juice off his thumb, "I was gonna leave early. But this is way more fun than standing around being awkward."
Maya smiled so hard her cheeks hurt. Maybe she wasn't the main character, but she was definitely part of the ensemble now.
A real fox darted through the backyard bushes at that exact moment, pausing to look at them before disappearing into the night.
"Did you see that?" Kyle whispered.
"Yeah," Maya said. "That was some main character energy."
