Fox at the Pool Edge
Maya tugged her fedora down lower, like that would somehow make her invisible at Jackson's pool party. The hat was her armor, her way of saying "I'm too cool to care" without actually having to talk to anyone. Inside, she was freaking out.
"Yo, Maya! You gonna stand there all day or actually get in?" Jackson called out, doing cannonballs that soaked half the party. Everyone laughed. Maya adjusted her hat and mumbled something about checking her phone.
That's when she saw it — a fox, orange-red against the manicured lawn, just watching them. It looked wild and unbothered, like it owned the place.
Suddenly, Maya was running — not toward the pool, but toward the woods behind Jackson's house. The fox bolted too, and she followed it past the treeline, away from the noise, away from Jackson showing off, away from the pressure to perform.
She slowed to catch her breath, leaning against an oak tree. The fox sat nearby, tail curled, watching her with calm, knowing eyes.
"You're just running away too, huh?" Maya whispered. She straightened up, realizing how ridiculous she must look — fedora and sundress, chasing a fox into the woods.
Back at the pool, she found everyone gathered around the deep end. "Bull," someone said. "That was such bull."
Maya peeked over shoulders. A boy from school — the one everyone called Bull for his stubborn streak — stood at the diving board's edge, shaking. He'd been talking all week about his perfect dive, but now he just stood there, paralyzed.
The fox. Running from fear. Bull.
Something clicked.
Maya stepped forward, tipped back her hat, and called out, "Hey Bull! Bet you can't beat a fox to the other side of the pool!"
He looked at her confused, then laughed. The tension broke. He jumped.
Later, Bull found her by the snack table. "Thanks, Maya. That was... cool of you."
"Whatever," she said, but she smiled. "Next time, don't be so full of bull about your skills."
"Deal."
As she walked home, Maya took off her fedora and let the wind mess up her hair. Maybe she didn't need armor after all.
