Fox at the Pool

Maya's palms were literally sweating through her lifeguard whistle. The community pool was packed, and Tyler—the absolute fox from junior year—was sprawled on a lounge chair looking like he owned the place.

"You gonna blow that whistle or just admire the view?" her best friend Chen whispered, nudging her with a gross toe.

"Shut up," Maya hissed, wiping her palms on her red shorts for the millionth time. She'd been crushing on Tyler since he'd defended her from that rude math teacher last semester. He had this messy dark hair and this smoldery thing he did with his eyes and—ugh.

The pool gates rattled. Something sleek and orange slipped through the crowd.

Maya blinked. A literal fox stood at the edge of the pool, water dripping from its russet fur. The animal looked completely unbothered, like it was just another teenager hanging out on a Tuesday.

"Yo, is that... a FOX?" someone shouted.

Tyler sat up, his perfect face confused. "No way."

The fox locked eyes with Maya. Something almost intelligent flickered in its golden gaze. Then it did the weirdest thing: it padded over to her lifeguard stand, sat down, and looked at Tyler like *you're not all that.*

The entire pool went silent. Then someone started laughing. Then everyone was laughing, including Tyler—this real, unguarded laugh that made him look like an actual human being instead of a Greek god.

"Your pool, your rules," he called to Maya, grinning.

Her palms stopped sweating.

The fox never came back. But sometimes, when Maya's working, she'll feel something watching from the fence line—a flash of russet fur, a reminder that sometimes the weirdest moments become the best stories.

Plus, Tyler finally asked for her number. The fox was, like, the best wingman ever. Even if he was wildlife.
