Fox at the Deep End
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her towel like a lifeline. The water glittered beneath the party lights, but all she could think about was how her bright orange swimsuit screamed 'notice me' when she desperately wanted to disappear.
"You coming in or what?" called Kayla, queen bee of sophomore year, doing laps with effortless grace. Maya's stomach did that familiar twist.
"Yeah, just... gotta fix my hair," Maya mumbled, faking with the ponytail she'd already perfected three times.
That's when she saw him. Fox. The guy everyone whispered about because he'd shown up to school day one wearing actual fox ears and refused to take them off. Now he sat on the diving board, swinging his legs, completely unbothered by the splashing crowd below.
"Your suit's sick," he said, catching her staring. "Orange. Like, actually distinct."
Maya blinked. Was he being sarcastic?
"My mom picked it out," she admitted, then immediately regretted it. So uncool.
Fox shrugged. "Still. It's brave." He stood up, and suddenly everyone was watching. "Race you to the other side?"
Before Maya could process, he dove — smooth as a knife through butter. Something in her chest shifted. This was it. The moment she could stay wrapped in her towel or just... jump.
Maya dropped the towel.
She hit the water, and it was cold and shocking and perfect. Swimming beside him, she felt something unfamiliar and electric: she wasn't just the new girl anymore. She was Maya, with her ridiculous orange suit and zero technique, laughing so hard she swallowed pool water, and for the first time since moving to this town, she wasn't watching from the edge.
Later, as they sat on the pool deck dripping wet, Fox grinned. "Same time next Friday?"
Maya smiled back, orange swimsuit blazing under the moon. "You're on."
