Fox Among Zombies
Maya felt like a zombie at Jason's Halloween party. Not the cool, flesh-eating kind with dramatic makeup — more like the undead version of herself, dragging her body through the crowded basement while her brain shouted WHY DID I COME HERE. She'd spent two hours on her costume only to realize halfway through the door that literally no one else was dressing up.
"Hey, nice... fox ears?" someone yelled over the bass-heavy music that was definitely violating some noise ordinance.
Maya touched the headband she'd refused to take off yet. "Thanks. It's conceptual."
She survived. Then she saw THE sphinx of Northwood High — Lena Rivera — standing alone by the snack table, looking mysterious and unapproachable as usual. Lena with her perfect skin and knowing smile, like she held all the school's secrets in those anime eyes. Some people called her stuck up. Maya just thought she was...
Intimidating? Inspiring? Both?
Next to Lena sat a bowl of orange slices, looking weirdly fresh and optimistic against the backdrop of cheap chips and stolen liquor.
Make your move, her brain said. Or stay a zombie forever.
Maya grabbed a slice of orange — for courage, apparently — and marched over. "Hey."
Lena turned. Those eyes locked onto Maya's fox ears. For a second, Maya wanted to evaporate.
Then Lena smiled. Actually smiled. "I like your costume."
"Thanks," Maya managed, suddenly very aware of her heartbeat. "It's conceptual."
"I dig conceptual." Lena popped an orange slice into her mouth. "You're in my English lit class, right? You're always reading during lunch."
The zombie feeling dissolved. Someone noticed her. Lena Rivera noticed her.
"Yeah," Maya said, finding her voice. "You're always staring out the window like you're plotting something."
Lena laughed. And the sound was better than the bass, better than the party, better than standing in the corner feeling dead inside.
"I'm not plotting," Lena said. "I'm just... observing. The social dynamics of high school are fascinating if you know how to watch."
"So you're like, studying us?"
"Maybe." Lena's eyes sparkled. "Want to observe together?"
The zombie inside Maya woke up. The fox in her grinned.
"Absolutely."
