Floating in the Shallow End

Maya stood at the edge of the hotel pool, the corporate retreat's laughter echoing off the tiled walls. She'd spent fifteen years climbing the ladder at Meridian Technologies, and now, at forty-two, she was finally being considered for the VP position. The promotion was within reach—until she'd discovered the security breach in her department three days ago.

Someone had been accessing her confidential files. Not a hacker from outside. Someone inside.

The water shimmered turquoise in the afternoon light, and she watched her colleagues splash and drink. Then she saw him: Daniel, her husband of twelve years, standing near the deep end wearing that ridiculous straw hat she'd bought him in Cabo. He was laughing with the CFO, his hand gesturing toward her office wing of the resort.

Maya's stomach dropped. They'd met at this same company, in different departments. She'd never considered—

"Maya!" Daniel waved, noticing her. "Come join us! The water's perfect!"

She forced a smile and walked toward the pool's edge, where he stood dripping wet, his hat dripping too. "Maybe later. Just catching up on some work."

"Always working," he said, but his eyes flickered toward the CFO, then back to her. "By the way, I ran into Jenkins from IT yesterday. Interesting conversation about security protocols."

The words hung between them like chlorine in the air. Maya felt the pieces snap into place: Daniel's late nights, his sudden interest in her projects, his questions about competitors. Her husband wasn't just unsupportive—he was the corporate spy her company had been hunting for months.

She looked at the pool, its surface deceptively calm. Something dark was swimming beneath it, something that would destroy both her marriage and her career if she acknowledged it. Instead, she smiled at the man wearing the hat she'd given him, the man who'd been selling her secrets to the highest bidder.

"The water looks lovely," she said. "I'll be right in."
