Flash Point at the Net

The padel court smelled like teenage desperation and expensive deodorant. Maya stood at the baseline, racket gripped so tight her knuckles matched the white walls. This was supposed to be casual Friday hits with the popular crowd—her ticket in, finally, after months of watching from the cafeteria sidelines.

"You coming or what?" Tyler called from across the net. His hair was perfect. Everything about Tyler was perfect. It was genuinely infuriating.

"Yeah, just—"

CRACK.

Lightning split the sky beyond the glass walls, so bright it left spots in her vision. The indoor lights flickered. Someone's phone chimed with a severe weather alert, but nobody moved. Because stopping mid-game would be admitting they weren't too cool for nature.

Maya's stomach growled. Loudly.

She'd skipped lunch because her mom, in her infinite wisdom, had packed spinach again—that weird organic stuff that smelled like lawn clippings and tasted like betrayal. Better to starve than be That Girl with the weird lunch in front of Tyler's crowd.

The spinach incident last semester was legendary. The green stains on her white jeans. The laughter. The three weeks of being "Spinach Girl" until someone else did something embarrassing.

"Maya!" Tyler yelled. "Your serve!"

She tossed the ball up. Her hands were shaking. Why was she shaking? It was just padel. Just a game. Just make-or-break social standing with people who'd probably forget her name next week anyway.

The ball hit her racket frame and sailed into the wall.

"My bad," someone muttered. Like it was her fault they'd invited her.

Another lightning flash, closer this time. The overhead lights died completely. Darkness, except for the storm beyond the glass—purple and blue and terrifyingly beautiful.

"Everyone out!" the front desk guy shouted.

They scrambled for the exit. Maya grabbed her bag, her heart hammering. This was it. The social equivalent of tripping in the hallway. She'd served terribly. She'd been weird and quiet. Spinach starvation humiliation, complete.

Then her phone buzzed in the dark. A group chat notification. Tyler had added her.

tyler_: emergency taco run? weather's too gnarly to drive home

maya_chen_: i'm in

tyler_: your serve was tragic btw lol we're teaching you

The spinach could wait. Maya typed back: you're on.
