First Taste of Courage

hatcablepapaya

Maya adjusted her bucket hat for the third time, pulling the brim lower like a shield. The house party thumped around her, bass vibrating through the floorboards, but she felt frozen near the snack table like a statue of awkwardness.

"Hey, you gonna hide under that thing all night?"

Maya jumped. It was Leo, the lanky boy from her history class who always drew comics in the margins of his notes. He was holding a tangled mess of HDMI cables like a dead octopus.

"Just... adjusting," Maya muttered.

"Wanna help? We're trying to set up Mario Kart in the basement but the TV situation is a disaster." Leo gestured with the cable knot. "I'm Leo, by the way."

"Maya." She followed him downstairs, where three guys were arguing over input settings. Something about the way Leo included her, like she wasn't some weirdo in a ridiculous hat, made her chest feel lighter.

Twenty minutes later, they'd wrestled the cable situation into submission. The game fired up, and someone's mom called down that snacks were ready. That's when Maya saw it—a bowl of papaya chunks on the counter, bright orange and impossibly foreign looking.

"What IS that?" Maya asked.

"Papaya," said Leo, popping a piece into his mouth. "My mom's obsessed. It's... different."

Maya had never tried it. Had never wanted to. But the way Leo looked at her—like he was waiting to see if she'd be boring or brave—made her grab a piece. It was soft and musky-sweet, nothing like she expected. Her face must have shown it because Leo laughed.

"First time?"

"Yeah," Maya admitted, then took another bite. "Not bad though."

They ended up on the back porch, Maya's hat pushed back, sharing papaya and talking until 2 AM about art and fear and how high school felt like walking through a funhouse mirror. For the first time, Maya felt like someone was seeing her, not her awkwardness.

"Your hat's actually pretty cool," Leo said as she left.

Maya smiled all the way home. She'd faced a terrifying party, fixed a cable disaster, tried a weird fruit, and maybe made a real friend. And she'd done it all wearing the ridiculous hat that was finally, undeniably hers.
