Felix's Scary Friend
Felix the fox loved exploring the Whispering Woods, especially on moonlit nights when the fireflies danced like tiny lanterns. But his favorite place was Mrs. Willow's magical garden, where the most delicious spinach grew leaves that shimmered like emeralds.
One evening, as Felix crept toward the garden, he heard a strange sound. *Crunch. Crunch.* Something was eating the spinach!
Felix peered through the fence and gasped. A zombie! A droopy, green-skinned creature was munching on Mrs. Willow's precious vegetables. Its eyes looked sad, not scary, and its clothes were covered in patches of moss.
"Hey!" Felix barked, puffing up his orange fur. "That's not yours!"
The zombie jumped, dropping a spinach leaf. "I-I'm sorry," it whispered, and Felix blinked. Zombies didn't say they were sorry. Zombies didn't whisper. And this zombie sounded... lonely.
"What's your name?" Felix asked, his curiosity stronger than his fear.
"Barnaby," the zombie said. "I was a gardener, once. Before the Changing. Now everyone runs away."
Felix's heart softened. He looked at Barnaby's dirty hands—hands that had clearly once tended plants with love.
"The spinach tastes better when you share it," Felix said, hopping through the fence. "Mrs. Willow won't mind if we take a little."
Together, they shared the magical spinach, which made Barnaby's green skin glow a little brighter and Felix's tail fluffier with joy.
"You're my first friend since the Changing," Barnaby said, tears mixing with the moss on his cheeks.
"And you're my first zombie friend," Felix grinned. "But definitely not my last."
Every night after that, Felix and Barnaby tended the garden together. The other forest animals slowly learned that Barnaby was gentle and kind, not scary at all. And Felix discovered that sometimes the scariest-looking creatures make the best friends of all.
