Evidence of the Storm

The gray had been coming in like an invasion, slow and inevitable. Elena stood before the bathroom mirror, hair dye staining her fingertips, the chemical smell sharp enough to mask everything else she'd been trying not to notice for months. At forty-two, she'd told herself she didn't care about vanity. But she did care. She cared about the way David looked at her lately — or didn't look at her.

His iPhone lay on the counter where he'd left it, charging. She'd promised herself she wouldn't. Trust was the foundation, wasn't it? But something had shifted between them, a tectonic drift she could feel in her bones.

Outside, the storm was building. The first fat drops of rain began to hammer against the glass as she picked up the phone. Her thumb hovered over the screen, then pressed.

The messages didn't surprise her, really. They just confirmed what her body had known for months: the way he pulled away from her touch in bed, the late nights at the office, the new cologne. There was another woman. There had been for six months.

Lightning cracked the sky open, and in that brilliant flash, she saw herself in the mirror: hair plastered to her forehead with sweat, the dye running down her temples like black tears. She looked wild. She looked like someone she didn't recognize.

She turned on the faucet and stuck her head under the water, scrubbing the dye from her hair, watching the dark swirls disappear down the drain. The cold shocked her awake. When she raised her head, water streaming down her face, she caught her own eyes in the mirror again.

Something had broken inside her, or maybe something had finally been set free. She dried her hair with rough towels, not bothering to style it. The gray would show through, and that was fine. Let it.

David came home two hours later to find her sitting in the dark, watching the rain. She didn't turn on the lights. She didn't need to see his face to know the truth was finally out there, between them, electric and undeniable as lightning.
