Evidence in the Strand

The long black hair wrapped around Marcus's button like a silk noose. Elena picked it off with trembling fingers, not because she was surprised—she'd suspected for months—but because the evidence was finally undeniable. Her own chestnut bob fell flat against her cheeks, another thing she'd let go since the promotion.

She was forty-three, swimming upstream in the corporate pyramid scheme where she'd spent two decades climbing rungs that only seemed to descend. Vice President of Human Resources. The title sounded powerful until you realized HR was just damage control for men like Marcus, who leaked secrets like sieve.

The hair belonged to someone from Compliance. Elena had seen them together at the Christmas gala, laughing too loudly at his recycled jokes. She was playing spy now—checking his phone while he slept, monitoring his calendar, tracking his lunch meetings like she was the one being paid to enforce corporate policy.

Her cat, Binx, wound around her ankles, hungry and oblivious. The only male who didn't lie to her, though he'd scratch her if she was three minutes late with breakfast. She fed him mechanically, then flushed the hair down the toilet.

Later that night, she lay in bed beside Marcus, his breathing rhythmic and innocent. He'd rolled onto her side again. She thought about the whistleblower investigation she was conducting—some junior analyst threatening to expose the accounting fraud they'd all quietly accepted as "industry standard." She'd been preparing to fire him tomorrow.

Maybe the real pyramid scheme was this marriage: she did the emotional labor, he reaped the benefits, and somewhere at the top, someone was laughing at both of them.

Elena slipped out of bed, walked to the bathroom, and cut an inch off her bangs. Something about the scissors' certainty felt like power. She'd do the whistleblowing investigation properly tomorrow. Let the chips fall where they may—Marcus, the fraud, the hair. Some things were worth burning down.
