Everything We Promised Under the Palm

The palm tree in their courtyard had died three months ago, and somehow Mara hadn't noticed until tonight.

She stood on the balcony of their Barcelona apartment, nursing a gin and tonic, watching Julio return from his padel match. His laughter drifted up from the street—bright, unburdened, the laugh of a man who had nothing to regret. He hadn't noticed the dead tree either. But then, Julio never noticed the slow deaths of things. Their marriage. Her career. The version of herself she'd sacrificed to become the wife of a man who collected hobbies like others collected stamps.

'Join me tomorrow,' he'd said that morning, pulling on his wrist guards. 'It's just a friendly match. You used to love it.'

She had loved it. Before it became another thing she did to keep him interested, another performance in the twenty-year production of being Julio's wife.

Her phone buzzed. A message from Lucas, the new senior partner at her firm. *Baseball tickets for Saturday. My client has season seats. Front row. Say yes.*

Lucas was twenty-eight, relentless in his ambition, careless with his charm. He'd looked at her during the merger meeting with eyes that saw something Julio hadn't looked for in a decade. A woman. Not a role.

She typed: *I can't.* Then deleted it. Typed: *Saturday works.*

Inside, Julio collapsed onto the sofa, still flushed from his game. 'Great match. You should come next time, Mara. It's not the same without you.'

The palm tree's fronds hung brown and heavy against the night sky.

'I'm busy Saturday,' she said. 'Lucas invited me to a baseball game. Client thing.'

Julio didn't look up from his phone. 'Nice. Have fun.'

That was it. No curiosity. No possessiveness. Just the easy assurance that she would always be there when he returned from whatever filled his days.

Mara finished her drink and went inside, past the dead palm, past the man who had forgotten how to see her. Saturday wasn't about baseball. It wasn't even about Lucas. It was about stepping off the stage she'd been performing on for half her life and finding out if she remembered how to be the main character in her own story.
