Electric Zombie Awakening

Maya felt like a zombie walking through the halls of Northwood High. Three hours of sleep, AP Bio test, and her mom's comment about her needing to act more "ladylike" had officially drained her life force. She slumped against her locker, already dreading the spring assembly where seniors had to perform some kind of talent showcase.

"You good?" asked Kai, leaning against the locker next to hers.

"Honestly? I'm dead. Like, actually deceased. Send help."

He laughed, flicking his lightning bolt earring. "Wanna come over after school? My cousin has those hair bleaching supplies. You've been talking about going silver for months."

Maya hesitated. Her mom would literally explode. But something about being a walking corpse made her reckless. "Screw it. Let's do it."

Three hours later, she stared in the mirror, her normally dark brown hair now a shock of silver-white. She looked radical. She looked like herself. She also looked like she was about to get grounded for life.

Thunder cracked as she stepped outside, the summer storm breaking right as she walked home. Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating her reflection in a shop window—a stranger with silver hair and a sudden wild grin.

Her mom's voice echoed in her head. What would people think? What about college applications? But standing there in the downpour, Maya realized she didn't care. She wasn't a zombie anymore, sleepwalking through someone else's expectations. She was awake.

The next day at school, heads turned. Whispers followed her down the hallway. But when she caught her reflection in the bathroom mirror—silver wet-look hair, dark eyeliner, actual light in her eyes—she didn't see the person everyone else saw.

She saw someone who'd finally stopped apologizing for existing.

Kai found her at lunch. "You look incredible. Like, actually iconic."

Maya smiled, real and genuine. "I know, right?"

Outside, another storm rolled in. Lightning struck somewhere distant, and she didn't even jump. She was done being scared of things that couldn't hurt her. The zombie was gone. The girl with the silver hair was just getting started.
