Electric Thursdays
Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, applying mascara with shaky hands. Tonight was the night—her first real party since transferring to Northwood High. The **lightning** streak in her hair (bleached, then dyed purple at 2 AM last weekend) felt like a metaphor for her entire existence right now: bright, unnatural, and totally experimental.
"You ready?" her cousin Kai called from downstairs. "Jordan's gonna be there."
Jordan. The name hit like an actual jolt. Maya had been low-key crushing on them since that chemistry lab partner assignment. She'd even started taking those weird gummy **vitamin** D supplements because Jordan mentioned they were "actually crucial" during their unit on sunlight and mental health. Desperate? Maybe. Effective? TBD.
The party was already popping when they arrived. Cheap LED lights flashed everywhere, turning the living room into a seizure-inducing nightmare. Someone handed Maya a Solo cup filled with what was supposedly fruit punch but tasted like regret and **orange** soda.
"Yo, you're the new girl, right?" It was Jordan, wearing a crop top that said 'GENDER IS A construct' in peeling white letters. Their eyes landed on Maya's lightning hair. "I like the vibe. Very... electric."
Maya's brain short-circuited. "Thanks! I, um, literally just did it. Like, this week."
Smooth. Her internal monologue was screaming. Smooth as sandpaper.
"Wanna get some air?" Jordan nodded toward the balcony. "It's getting mad loud in here."
Outside, the air was thick with pending rain. The first real **lightning** strike illuminated the sky—perfect timing, honestly.
"I always feel more alive during storms," Jordan said, leaning against the railing. "Like, the world's literally charging up for something."
Maya's heart did something concerning. "Same, though. That's... actually why I did the hair. Storm energy, you know?"
Jordan grinned. And in that moment, something shifted. Not a forever thing, not a Disney moment, but real. A first genuine connection. Maya's first party, first crush, first time feeling like herself instead of a performance.
"Hey," Jordan said softly. "Next time, maybe we can actually hang. When there's not, like, a million people around."
Maya nodded, unable to stop smiling. The **orange** cup in her hand suddenly felt less like a prop and more like a beginning.
