Electric Summer Riddles

Marcus stood paralyzed at the edge of Jessica's pool, clutching a red solo cup like it was a lifeline. The popular kids were clustered around the deep end, laughing at something Tyler said. Tyler, who had that effortless confidence Marcus could only dream of.

"Hey, new guy!" Tyler called. "You ever tried papaya?"

Marcus shook his head, dreading what came next.

"Dude, you're missing out." Tyler tossed him a slice of the orange-fleshed fruit. "It's basically nature's candy."

Marcus took a tentative bite. Sweet, musky, weirdly peppery. "Actually... it's pretty good?"

"See? Marcus gets it." Tyler grinned. "Hey, I bet you can't beat me in a race."

"Running or swimming?" Marcus asked, then immediately regretted sounding so eager.

"Both." Tyler's eyes glinted. "We start at the fence, run to the pool, swim three laps, first one back wins. Loser has to answer the sphinx's riddle."

"The what?"

Tyler pointed to an ancient stone statue half-buried in Jessica's garden—a weathered sphinx with chipped wings. "My dad found it at an estate sale. It's got these riddles carved into the base. Impossible stuff."

Marcus's heart hammered. He was on cross country, but Tyler was a swimmer. Still, everyone was watching now, waiting. Maybe this was his chance to stop being the invisible new kid.

"You're on."

They lined up at the fence. Thunder rumbled in the distance, but Marcus barely noticed. He was focused on the finish line.

"Go!"

They tore across the backyard, grass flying beneath their sneakers. Marcus's lungs burned as he reached the pool first, but Tyler was right behind him. They hit the water together, chlorine stinging Marcus's eyes. Stroke for stroke, lap for lap, Marcus pulled ahead. His arms felt like lead but he pushed harder, remembering every afternoon of practice, every race he'd lost back home.

His fingers grazed the wall first.

"No WAY!" Tyler splashed water everywhere, laughing. "You actually smoked me!"

Marcus climbed out, dripping and grinning. A flash of lightning split the sky, illuminating Tyler's impressed face and the other kids cheering.

"Alright, fair's fair." Tyler led him to the sphinx. "Read the riddle, bro."

Marcus traced the weathered inscription with his wet fingers. "What runs but never walks, has a mouth but never talks?"

He thought for a second, then laughed. "A river."

"WOAH." Jessica pushed through the crowd. "Nobody gets that on the first try!"

Tyler clapped him on the shoulder. "Marcus, my man, you're officially part of the squad."

For the first time since moving to this town, Marcus felt like he might actually belong here. The lightning flashed again, but this time, he didn't flinch.
