Electric Summer Nights

Maya's first mistake was agreeing to play padel with the cool kids. Like, who even plays padel? It's tennis's weird cousin that nobody talks about at family reunions.

But there she was, sweating through her favorite vintage tee while Sierra—who was basically Instagram royalty in real life—demonstrated her backhand. Maya had spent the entire summer trying to crack Sierra's friend group, and this was apparently the final boss level.

"You ever try papaya?" Sierra asked between serves, flipping her perfectly beach-waved hair. "My mom's been buying it for this 'healthy gut' phase she's going through."

Maya squinted against the sun. "Is that the one that looks like alien flesh inside?"

"Dude, yes." Sierra laughed, and Maya felt that little zap in her chest. The dangerous one. "I dare you to try some. My house, after this."

Because Maya's life was a series of questionable decisions under peer pressure, she agreed.

The sky turned that perfect orange that makes you believe in aesthetics just as they reached Sierra's backyard. Like, the kind of orange that filters exist for. And there it was—the papaya. Looking deceptively normal on the outside.

"Just try it," Chloe said, already filming for TikTok.

Maya took a bite and immediately made a face that launched a thousand memes. "It tastes like... if a cantaloupe gave up on life."

Then the sky went dark. Like, horror movie dark.

"That's not aesthetic," breathed someone.

CRACK.

Lightning split the sky above them—this jagged purple-white scar across everything. And in that flash, Maya saw Sierra's face. Not the curated Instagram version. The real one. Scared. Wonderstruck. Human.

They ran inside, soaked and laughing and completely unhinged, leaving the papaya on the patio table like a sacrificial offering.

"We're never playing padel again," Sierra declared, wringing out her hair.

"Agreed," Maya said, feeling something shift. "But uh, tomorrow? We could try that boba place."

Sierra grinned. "Only if you never make me try papaya."

"Deal."
