Electric Summer Nights

The chlorine hit Maya's nose before she even saw the pool. She gripped her phone tightly, scrolling through Instagram while standing awkwardly at Sarah's birthday party. Everyone else was already in the water, laughing and splashing like they'd known each other forever.

Maya felt like a complete zombie. Finals week had drained her soul, and her mom had insisted she take those gross vitamin gummies every morning. "They'll help with energy!" she'd said, but so far, Maya just felt tired and awkward.

She watched from the edge as Jason—the guy she'd been crushing on since seventh grade—did a cannonball off the diving board. Water sprayed everywhere, and girls screamed. Maya adjusted her bikini top, suddenly hyper-aware of how she looked. The pool lights flickered on as the sun set, casting everything in an eerie blue glow.

"Hey, you coming in?"

Maya jumped. It was Chloe, the quiet girl from her English class who always sat in the back.

"I don't know," Maya said.

Chloe sat on the edge, feet dangling in the water. "I felt like a zombie all week too," she said quietly. "My mom's making me take these vitamins now. Supposed to help with stress or whatever."

Maya smiled. "Same here."

They sat in comfortable silence for a minute. Distant lightning flashed across the sky, followed by low rumbling.

"Storm's coming," Chloe said. "Everyone's going to have to get out anyway."

"Thank god," Maya said. "I was literally just standing here overthinking everything."

Chloe laughed. "Me too. I always feel like everyone's watching me, even though they're definitely not."

"EXACTLY," Maya said, feeling weirdly relieved. "It's like, nobody actually cares that much, right?"

"Right," Chloe said. "But my brain won't believe it."

Suddenly, Jason popped up beside them, dripping wet. "You guys coming in? It's actually not that cold once you're in."

Maya's stomach did that annoying flutter thing. "Maybe," she managed.

"Don't overthink it," Chloe whispered, nudging her. "Just jump."

And before Maya could chicken out, Chloe grabbed her hand and they both jumped in together.

The shock of cold water woke Maya up completely. She came up sputtering, laughing, and saw Jason grinning at her. "Finally!"

More lightning flashed closer this time, and thunder rolled through. Everyone whooped louder, like the storm made everything more intense. Maya found herself actually having fun, not overthinking, not worrying about how she looked or what people thought.

For the first time all night, she felt present. The vitamin gummies hadn't worked, but this—this electric feeling, this connection, this moment—was better than any supplement.

She caught Chloe's eye across the pool, and they both smiled. Sometimes, Maya thought, you just needed a push. Or a storm. Or someone to jump in with you.
