Electric Summer Nights
The bonfire crackled as Maya leaned toward Jake, her heart doing that nervous flutter thing it always did around him lately. Behind them, the **water** lapped against the shore in rhythmic whispers, the ocean reflecting the starlight like scattered diamonds.
"You gonna finish that?" Marcus pointed at the barely-touched soda in her hand. He'd been in zombie mode all night, dark circles under his eyes from the Fortnite marathon he'd pulled the day before.
"Bro, you good?" Jake laughed, tossing another log onto the fire. "You look literally dead."
"I'm fine," Maya insisted, though her palms were sweating. This was it—the perfect moment to make her move. They'd been flirting for weeks, and the whole friend group knew it was bound to happen. The chemistry was obvious.
Then Chloe's **dog**, a chaotic golden retriever named Bear, came barreling out of nowhere, splashing straight through the bonfire's glow and—yep—straight into Maya's lap, sending her soda flying everywhere.
"BEAR!" Chloe shrieked, grabbing the dog's collar. "I am literally so sorry, oh my god."
Maya's face burned. The moment. The PERFECT moment. Gone. Just like that, she was back to being awkward Maya, the girl who couldn't even flirt without getting jumped by a seventy-pound fur missile.
Jake was already helping her up, his hand warm on her arm. "You good?"
"Yeah," she mumbled, refusing to meet his eyes. "Fine."
And then, as if the universe was playing some cosmic joke, **lightning** split the sky—a brilliant flash that illuminated everything for a split second, including Jake's expression. He wasn't laughing. He was just... looking at her, like he was seeing something real for the first time.
"Cool," he said softly, the thunder still rumbling overhead. "Just cool."
Three words. The opposite of what she'd hoped for, but somehow exactly what she needed to hear. Maybe cool was better than perfect. Maybe messy, chaotic, unexpected moments with literal wet clothes and frizzy hair were the ones that actually mattered.
"Yeah," Maya found herself smiling. "Cool."
