Electric Summer
Maya gripped the plastic cup so hard it was practically spilling. Her first real high school party, and she was already plotting her exit strategy.
The pool deck was packed — juniors and seniors she'd only ever seen from across the cafeteria. Someone bumped past her, laughing.
"Yo, you gonna swim or what?"
She nodded, forcing a smile. "Yeah, just, uh, hydrating first."
Because that's what you did at parties, right? Pretended to be chill while your heart hammered like crazy?
Her eyes landed on the food table. Tropical theme, apparently. A whole papaya sat there, sliced into neat orange wedges. Maya had never even tried papaya. Was that weird? At sixteen, shouldn't she have experienced more than the safe confines of her suburban life?
"Never had it before, huh?"
Maya jumped. It was him — Lucas, the swim team captain, the one whose smile made her forget basic sentences.
"Is it that obvious?" she said, before she could overthink it.
Lucas grinned. "It's an acquired taste. Like most things worth having."
Her brain short-circuited. Was he flirting? With her?
Then came the announcement that changed everything: a massive storm rolling in fast. People scrambled, laughing, packing up towels. Maya stood frozen, caught in the chaos.
Then lightning lit up the sky, a jagged fork that made everyone gasp. Rain started pelting down, warm and sudden.
"C'mon!" Lucas grabbed her hand, pulling her toward the pool. "May as well embrace it!"
They jumped in together, fully clothed, water swirling around them in the dark, illuminated by flashes of lightning. The other kids were running for cover, but here they were, swimming in the rain like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Maya laughed, really laughed, feeling electric inside, finally understanding what everyone meant about summer magic.
