Electric Summer

I stood by the snack table clutching a Vitaminwater like it was a life raft, which honestly, it kind of was. The neon blue bottle matched nothing at Maya's end-of-summer pool party, but neither did I.

Across the yard, the padel court had become ground zero for the popular crowd. Jordan had somehow roped everyone into playing, even though half of us had never touched a racquet before. His laughter carried over the splashing and music, that easy confidence that made everything look effortless.

"Hey!" Jordan appeared beside me, water dripping from his hair. "You're missing the tournament."

"I'm more of a spectator," I said, gesturing vaguely at my street clothes. "Also, I've never played padel in my life."

"Perfect. I'll teach you." He grabbed my hand before I could overthink it, his palm warm against mine. "C'mon."

The padel lesson turned into chaos pretty quickly. I kept missing the ball entirely, but Jordan didn't seem to care. Every time I flubbed a shot, he'd crack a joke that made me forget about everyone watching.

Then the sky opened up.

One minute we were playing, the next lightning was cracking overhead, turning the yard into something electric and alive. Someone screamed, and suddenly everyone was racing toward the pool house. But instead of seeking cover, Jordan pulled me toward the pool.

"Jump in!" he yelled over the thunder.

"What? In this storm?"

"Exactly!" He grinned, wild and fearless. "Live a little, new girl!"

So I did. I jumped, fully clothed, into the water with him. The cool shock was nothing compared to the warmth spreading through my chest as we both surfaced, gasping and laughing while lightning flashed above us.

Maybe summer wasn't about fitting in perfectly. Maybe it was about jumping in anyway, preferably during lightning storms, preferably with someone who made you forget to be afraid.
