Electric Storm

I froze, panic rising as my iPhone screen went black during the worst storm of the semester. This phone was my lifeline - my connection to friends, homework assignments, and basically my entire social existence. Outside, lightning flashed like a strobe light, turning my bedroom into a disco of shadows.

My tabby cat Luna, who'd been hiding under my bed since the thunder started, finally crept out. She'd been on these new vitamins from the vet for a week - something about boosting her immune system - and honestly, she'd been extra clingy and weird lately. But right now, her warm weight curling up on my lap felt grounding.

"Great," I muttered to no one. "No phone, no WiFi, and now I'm talking to my cat."

Luna purred like a tiny engine, head-butting my chin. I'd been so obsessed with my followers, my feed, my aesthetic that I hadn't actually played with her in... how long?

Another lightning strike illuminated the room, and I caught my reflection in the window - phone in one hand, glazed expression, completely disconnected. Luna stared at me with these golden eyes like she was judging my entire existence.

"What?" I said defensively. "You think you're better than me because you don't have social media?"

She just purred louder and kneaded my stomach with her paws.

I spent the next two hours doing something I hadn't done in months: nothing. No scrolling, no comparing myself to people's highlight reels, no carefully crafting the perfect caption. Just me and Luna, watching the storm rage outside while my room felt surprisingly peaceful.

When the power finally came back, I didn't immediately grab my iPhone. I sat there, Luna asleep on my legs, realizing something had shifted. The constant FOMO, the anxiety about missing out - it had all seemed so important until I'd been forced to disconnect.

The next day at school, my friends were like, "Did you see Taylor's post? Were you online last night?" And I just shrugged, feeling strangely light.

"Nah," I said. "I was hanging out with my cat."

They looked at me like I'd grown three heads, but whatever. Luna's vitamins might be working - she seemed way more energetic and confident than usual. Or maybe she was just always like this and I'd been too busy to notice.

That night, I posted a photo of Luna sleeping on my windowsill with the storm clouds behind her. No filters, no careful curation. Just my cat, being unapologetically herself.

The likes poured in, but for once, I didn't care about the numbers. I was too busy thinking about how sometimes the best connections happen when you put down the phone and let life find you.
