Electric Sphinx

Maya's phone buzzed in her pocket like nervous lightning. Three texts from Jenna: 'where r u???' 'this party is LIT' 'pls say ur coming'. Maya stood outside Jordan's house, heart doing cartwheels. This was it—her first actual high school party. No parents, no supervision, just Friday night chaos.

She'd spent two hours on her eyeliner, trying to look effortless but cute. Now her palms were sweating. What if she said something weird? What if nobody talked to her? The front door swung open and some sophomore she didn't recognize stumbled out, laughing too loud at nothing.

Then she saw the dog.

It was Jordan's golden retriever, Buddy, somehow escaped from the backyard. But something was wrong. The dog sat on the front lawn, staring at Maya with intensity that made her stomach flip. Not like a normal dog. Like it was waiting.

'Maya!' Jordan appeared in the doorway. 'Thank GOD you're here. You have to help us.'

'Me? Why?'

'The Sphinx.' Jordan gestured frantically toward the garage. 'Tyler's dad went to Egypt and brought back this massive statue thing, and now nobody can get into the garage because it's blocking everything, and we need to move it before his parents get home tomorrow.'

Maya followed them to the garage, Buddy trotting behind them like a furry conspirator. There it was—a miniature sphinx statue, maybe three feet tall, carved from dark stone, positioned perfectly in front of the garage door like an ancient guardian having a very bad day.

'We've been trying to move it for an hour,' Tyler said, rubbing his arms. 'It's heavier than it looks.'

The group stood around the sphinx in the fluorescent glow of the garage lights. Maya felt suddenly present, not like the new girl who didn't belong, but like someone who could solve this. She remembered her uncle showing her how to lift with her legs, not her back. How to distribute weight.

'Okay,' Maya said, voice steadier than she felt. 'On three. We lift together.'

Nobody argued. Nobody made her feel like the outsider. They just listened.

Lightning cracked across the sky, distant thunder rumbling like approval.

'Together,' Maya said.

They lifted. The sphinx rose.
