Electric Papaya Sunset

Maya's hair was supposed to be caramel highlights. Her mom's cousin who worked at a salon swore it would look natural. Instead, Maya stared in the mirror and saw ORANGE. Like, traffic cone radioactive pumpkin orange.

"No no no," she whispered, fingers trembling through the frizzy disaster. Spring fling was in three days. Marcus had finally noticed her existence in AP Bio — he'd literally asked to borrow her calculator yesterday — and now she looked like a human mango.

The papaya smoothie she'd made sat forgotten on the counter, already separating into weird layers. That was the thing about trying new things. Sometimes you got something refreshing and tropical. Sometimes you got a disaster that made you want to hide in your room forever.

Her phone buzzed. Sasha's meme account had posted something new.

Maya grabbed the smoothie and stormed outside. The Texas heat hit her like a wall. She sat on the porch swing, pineapple-shaped ice cubes melting in her cup, and tried not to cry because she refused to be that girl.

Then the sky cracked open.

LIGHTNING forked across the clouds like something out of a movie. The air smelled like rain and ozone and that specific metallic way the world gets right before everything changes. A storm was rolling in fast.

Her hair caught the wind. The ORANGE strands whipped around her face like literal flames.

Maya started laughing. Like, couldn't stop, ugly snorting laughing. Because this was fine. Everything was fine. Her hair looked ridiculous and her mom was going to lose it and Marcus probably wouldn't look twice at someone who looked like a highlighter exploded on her head.

But also? Her phone camera, open by accident, showed her laughing in this wild orange halo against a storm-dark sky, papaya smoothie raised like a toast.

She posted it to her finsta. orange_chaos_spring_2024.

The likes rolled in immediately.

Sasha: "SCREAMING iconic"

Jamal: "may u finally snapped and im here for it"

Even Marcus: "wait that's actually kinda fire??"

Maya sat on the porch as rain started to fall, lightning still flashing overhead, and drank her melted papaya sludge. Sometimes the disasters were the best part.
