Electric Papaya Summer

Maya stood by the snack table at Jordan's tropical-themed birthday party, clutching her red solo cup like a lifeline. Someone had constructed a literal pyramid of pineapple juice boxes in the center — très extra, even for Jordan.

"You gonna actually drink that papaya punch or just stare at it?"

Maya jumped. Riley stood there, leaning against the fake palm tree Jordan's mom had rented, wearing that effortlessly cool grin that made Maya's stomach do actual gymnastics. Why did he have to be so... ugh?

"It's... interesting," Maya managed. "Like, who even likes papaya?"

"My little brother," Riley said, stepping closer. "He's weird. Kinda like how you're still standing here alone when everyone's in the backyard."

Maya felt her face burning. "I'm not alone. I'm... strategically positioned."

"For what? Zombie apocalypse?"

"For avoiding social suicide, thank you very much."

Riley laughed, and it was this genuine sound that made something unlock in Maya's chest. Then it happened — that whole lightning-strike moment where the atmosphere suddenly shifted. Not actual lightning (though the summer storm outside would hit later). No, this was worse.

Jordan's little brother came tearing through the living room, wearing Maya's old teddy bear from childhood — the one she'd accidentally left here last month during study group. Bear-Bear, wearing a tiny Hawaiian shirt.

"LOOK EVERYONE!" he shrieked. "I'M MAYA'S BEAR!"

Dead silence. Maya wanted to evaporate. This was it. The end of her social life as she knew it.

But then Riley was laughing. Not mean laughing — actually cracking up.

"Bear-Bear Lives," he said, wiping tears from his eyes. "Dude, that's iconic."

And somehow, the awkwardness dissolved into something else. Someone started a chant. "BEAR-BEAR! BEAR-BEAR!" Even Maya had to laugh.

Outside, actual lightning flashed as the summer storm finally broke. But inside, something weirdly perfect was happening.

"Hey," Riley said, still grinning. "Wanna help me rescue Bear-Bear before Jordan's brother destroys him? And maybe... get some actual papaya punch?"

Maya smiled. Maybe social suicide wasn't in the cards tonight after all.
