Electric Papaya Moment

Maya pulled her beanie down lower, cursing her school's no-hat policy internally. Why did freshman year have to coincide with the worst hair cut of her life? The hat was her armor against the world—or at least against Jessica's crew sitting two tables away.

"Ew, what IS that?" Jessica's voice carried across the cafeteria like she'd practiced it for maximum impact. "It looks like... I don't know, alien guts?"

Maya's face burned. The papaya her mom had packed sat on her tray, vibrant orange and impossibly foreign-looking in a sea of brown bag lunches. She'd begged for normal sandwiches. Begged.

"It's papaya," Maya said, surprising herself with how steady her voice sounded. "It's actually really good."

Jessica made a show of gagging. Her friends giggled like they'd rehearsed.

Then lightning struck outside—literally. The cafeteria windows flashed white, and thunder shook the building. Everyone jumped. Conversation stopped.

In that weird electric silence, Maya locked eyes with the new guy, Elijah, from her history class. He was staring at her papaya like it was the most interesting thing he'd ever seen.

"Is that sweet?" he asked, suddenly right at her table. "I've never tried papaya."

Maya's brain short-circuited. "Yeah, it's... do you want some?"

He nodded, and suddenly Jessica's gagging noises weren't the soundtrack of Maya's existence anymore. Elijah tried the papaya, made a face, then grinned. "Okay, that's actually kind of amazing. Not gonna lie."

"My mom says it's an acquired taste," Maya found herself saying, and for the first time all year, she didn't hate that answer.

Jessica rolled her eyes so hard Maya wondered if they'd get stuck, but whatever. Let her rotate.

The bell rang. Maya pulled off her hat—whatever, detention could wait—and took another bite of papaya. Lightning flashed again, but this time it didn't feel like a warning. It felt like something electric was just beginning.
