Electric Papaya

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tangled in her newly **orange** hair. It was supposed to be caramel highlights. Her stylist said 'oops' and charged her anyway. Now she looked like a traffic cone.

'You going to Jake's party?' her sister yelled from downstairs.

Maya groaned. Jake's parties were legendary—everyone who was anyone would be there. And she'd show up looking like a radioactive pumpkin.

She threw on her favorite black hoodie and grabbed her phone, but the battery was at 3%. Her charging **cable** was frayed somewhere in her backpack, probably tangled around old gum wrappers. Whatever. She'd risk it.

The party was already chaos when she arrived. Someone's dad was probably away for the weekend. Maya made a beeline for the kitchen, hoping for invisibility.

'Nice hair,' someone commented.

Maya spun around. It was Leo from her English class, currently holding a whole **papaya** like it was a beer.

'Thanks,' she deadpanned. 'Nice fruit.'

'It's exotic,' he shrugged, then took a bite. Maya made a face, but honestly? She'd wanted to try papaya forever but never had the guts to order one at the grocery store. Too many people watching.

'Want some?' Leo offered.

'Why not.' Maya took the papaya and bit into it like an apple. It tasted weirdly perfect—sweet and earthy, like nothing she'd ever had. Leo raised his eyebrows, impressed.

Then her phone died. Black screen. No way to check if her friends were looking for her, no way to post a story looking effortlessly cool. Just her and Leo and his exotic fruit party trick.

Outside, a summer storm broke. **Lightning** flashed across the sky, illuminating everything in stark blue-white. For a second, Maya caught her reflection in the sliding glass door—orange hair and papaya-stained lips, not hiding anymore.

'Thunder in five seconds,' Leo counted down. 'One, two, three—'

BOOM.

Maya laughed, actually laughed. 'This is ridiculous.'

'Totally.' Leo grinned. 'Your hair kind of slays though.'

She rolled her eyes but felt herself smiling back. Maybe traffic cones could be cute. Maybe she could own it.

They sat on the back porch watching the storm, eating papaya like they'd been doing it forever. Maya's phone stayed dead in her pocket, and for the first time all night, she didn't care.
