Electric Orange

Maya had spent sixteen years blending into the beige walls of high school like human furniture. Invisible. Forgettable. The girl whose name teachers always hesitated to say during attendance.

"You sure about this?" Chloe asked, inspecting the box of neon hair dye in the drugstore aisle next to shelves stocked with every possible vitamin supplement known to humanity. "That's, like, commitment energy."

Maya's hand hovered over the box. Somewhere between the vitamin C gummies her mom swore by and the protein powder bros lived for, she'd made a decision. No more safe choices. No more being the background character in her own life.

"I'm not doing this for attention," Maya said, though her voice cracked. "I'm doing it because I'm tired of feeling like a NPC."

Chloe nodded, understanding passing between them like a secret language. "Then let's do it. But if your mom kills you, I'm saying I knew nothing."

The transformation happened in Chloe's bathroom with bad lighting and a playlist that bounced between pop punk and something too emotional. As the orange dye saturated Maya's mousy brown hair, something shifted inside her chest. Like lightning, the realization struck: she'd been waiting for permission to exist loudly.

When she rinsed the dye out and caught her reflection, electric orange stared back—vivid, unapologetic, impossible to ignore. Her hair practically glowed.

Monday at school, the looks ranged from shocked to amused to genuinely impressed. But for the first time, people actually saw her. Not as "that quiet girl" but as Maya with the orange hair who gave zero fucks about being anybody else.

Her mom had sighed when she saw it. "That's... definitely a choice."

"It's me," Maya said, and her voice didn't crack this time.

That night, thunder rattled her window as lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating her orange hair in the mirror. She smiled at her reflection. The girl who'd spent years trying to disappear had finally decided to show up.
