Electric July

iphonebullpalmlightningpool

Maya's palms were sweating as she stood by the edge of the pool, clutching her iPhone like it was her only lifeline. The screen showed Lucas's last text—*u coming?*—sent three hours ago. Now he was cannonballing into the deep end with Tyler, that absolute bull who lived to make everyone feel small.

"Maya! Get in here!" Lucas called, dripping wet and grinning like she hadn't spent the entire summer overthinking every interaction they'd ever had.

Her phone buzzed again. A notification from her mom: *Storm coming. Stay safe.*

Above them, the first crack of lightning split the sky—electric violet veins across the darkening July blue. Everyone cheered, because weather at a pool party meant the night was just getting started. But Maya felt something shift.

Tyler climbed out, shaking water everywhere like the giant bull in a china shop he was. "What's the matter, Maya? Chicken?"

The joke landed hard. Everyone stared.

But then Lucas splashed Tyler full in the face. "Leave her alone, man."

Maya's phone slipped from her palm—*plink*—into the water.

Everyone went silent.

Then Maya laughed. Actually laughed. Because suddenly it didn't matter. The iPhone was gone (RIP to the 47 embarrassing drafts she'd never sent), Tyler looked ridiculous wiping water from his eyes, and Lucas was already diving in after her phone.

He surfaced, holding the dripping device. "Your mom's gonna kill you."

"Worth it," Maya said, and jumped in fully clothed.

The storm broke as they all swam, lightning flashing above like strobe lights at the dance they'd never have. In that moment, palms no longer sweating, phone ruined, bull silenced, Maya finally felt electric.
