Electric in the Bathroom Mirror

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers hovering over the bathroom counter. The hair dye box promised "midnight blue" but what if she ended up looking like a smurf? Her phone buzzed — group chat blowing up about prom, which was exactly three days away. Three days until she'd have to stand under those gym lights next to Tyler, who'd finally asked her to go after months of flirting during chemistry lab.

She'd spent the past week chugging those gross hair growth vitamins her mom swore by, even though they smelled like expired fruit punch. Her best friend Jade said they were placebo, but Maya was desperate. Her hair had to reach that perfect cascade down her back, not this shoulder-length awkwardness that made her feel like she was still stuck in middle school.

Outside, thunder rumbled. A summer storm was rolling in, the air thick with that electric feeling before lightning strikes. Maya grabbed the dye box, hands shaking. What was she so afraid of? Looking stupid? Tyler not liking it? Or maybe the real fear was that she was trying to change everything about herself to fit some perfect image that didn't exist.

Her phone lit up again. Tyler: "Can't wait for prom. You look amazing however you are."

Maya blinked. Seriously? He'd sent that while she was panicking over hair dye? Suddenly the bathroom lights flickered — actual lightning this time, cutting through her spiral of overthinking. She laughed out loud. Why was she making everything so complicated?

She pushed the hair dye box aside. Instead, she grabbed her phone and snapped a selfie, messy hair and all, texting back: "Can't wait either. Not changing anything."

Some moments hit you like lightning — sudden, bright, illuminating everything you'd been too scared to see before. And sometimes the glow-up everyone needed wasn't in a box or a vitamin pill. It was just deciding that who you already were was enough.
