Electric Fur and Social Pyramids
Zoye adjusted her Snapchat crown filter in the bathroom mirror, feeling like a fraud. At Westbridge High, the social pyramid was crystal clear—cheerleaders at the apex, theater kids somewhere in the middle, and everybody else just... existing. Zoye existed.
"You coming to Maya's party?" her best friend Kai asked through the stall door.
"Pass. I have plans with Lucifer."
"Your cat? Seriously?"
"Lucifer is my emotional support animal, thank you very much." That, and Zoye's mom would actually murder her if she got caught at another unsupervised rager.
But Friday night delivered different vibes. Outside her window, lightning cracked the sky open—those jagged electric veins that made everything feel possible and dangerous simultaneously. Zoye grabbed her phone to capture it, and that's when she saw it: a fox, standing impossibly still in her backyard, russet fur glowing silver in the flash.
It wasn't running. It was watching her.
Zoye's chest did that thing where it felt too small for her heart. She'd never seen a fox this close, something wild and unbothered by the whole social pyramid thing. Foxes didn't care if they were popular. They just *were*.
She cracked her window open. The fox's eyes met hers—amber, ancient, absolutely zero judgment.
"You're not scared of the storm," she whispered.
The fox dipped its head like, *obviously*, then vanished into shadows like it had never existed.
Zoye sat with Lucifer (who was definitely judging her from the bed) and realized something wild: she'd been trying to climb a pyramid that didn't matter. The fox wasn't at the top or bottom of anything—it was just living its best life, unapologetically itself.
Monday morning, Zoye walked through Westbridge's halls wearing her grandpa's vintage jacket (so cringe, so perfect).
"Did you dye your hair?" someone asked.
"Nah. Just deciding to exist differently."
The pyramid was still there. But Zoye? She was done climbing. She was going to be the fox—wild, unpredictable, and completely unbothered.
Besides, Lucifer had already liked the new vibe. That was all the validation she needed.
