Electric Fruit at the Pyramid
Maya stood at the edge of the cafeteria gym, clutching her stupid pyramid from geometry class like it was some kind of shield. The whole cheer squad was literally building a human pyramid in the center of the room, and suddenly her flimsy cardboard project felt even more pathetic.
"You gonna stand there all night or actually come talk to people?" Sammy appeared beside her, wearing this ridiculous oversized bucket hat that made him look like a suburban dad trying to be cool. But he was smiling, so Maya shrugged.
"Maybe. If the punch doesn't kill me first."
"Speaking of." Sammy grabbed her hand and dragged her toward the food table. "You have to try this."
"What is it?"
"Papaya. My abuela brought some, and nobody's touching it because they're all basic."
Maya stared at the orange fruit cubes. She'd never had papaya before. Her family was more pizza-and-tacos vibe, not tropical adventures. But Sammy's eyes were all bright and encouraging, so she popped a piece into her mouth.
Whoa.
It was sweet but weirdly earthy, like nothing she'd ever tasted. Her eyes went wide, and Sammy burst out laughing.
"Right? It's lowkey amazing."
"Actually yeah?" Maya laughed back, and suddenly the gym felt less terrifying.
Then the lights flickered. Thunder cracked outside so loud that half the room jumped. Someone screamed like they were in a horror movie instead of just a storm.
But Maya felt it—that jittery, electricity feeling, like the air before something huge happens. Like when you're about to say something you've been holding back forever.
"Sammy?" she said over the noise.
"Yeah?"
"I like your hat."
He adjusted the bucket hat, grinning like she'd just handed him a million dollars. "Thanks. My dad said I'd look like a dweeb."
"He's wrong."
Lightning flashed through the windows, turning everything white-blue for a second. In that moment, Maya realized she'd been overthinking everything. The pyramid she'd built in geometry might be falling apart. The cheer pyramid might be wobbly. But this? This electric papaya moment was real.
"Want to get out of here?" Sammy asked.
Maya grabbed her geometry project. "Abso-freaking-lutely."
