Electric Friday Night

Maya's hair was supposed to be perfect. She'd spent forty-five minutes with the straightener, her bathroom mirror fogged up, Kacey Musgraves playing at volume level that definitely annoyed her mom. First house party of sophomore year, and Jackson was gonna be there. Jackson, who'd actually liked her Instagram story yesterday. The hair had to behave.

Then came her brother's dog, Buster—a chaotic golden retriever mix with zero respect for personal grooming rituals. One enthusiastic tail wag later, a whole water bowl had splashed across Maya's freshly straightened hair. Frizz city. Complete disaster.

"BUSTER! You have got to be kidding me!" She stared at the mirror, her hair now a half-straight, half-frizzy explosion of betrayal. Great. Just great. Jackson was going to see her looking like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket.

Her mom popped her head in. "Honey, there's a storm coming. You sure about the party?"

Maya was definitely sure. She couldn't NOT go. She threw on a beanie, grabbed her phone, and texted her best friend: emergency hair situation, plz help.

Outside, the sky was turning that weird purple-green that meant serious weather. The first rumble of thunder rolled through as Maya's friend Chloe picked her up. "You're wearing a beanie in August?" Chloe asked, but Maya just shook her head. Too stressed to explain.

The party was already lit when they arrived. Jackson WAS there. Maya spent the first twenty minutes hyperventilating by the snack table, terrified to remove her beanie. What if he saw her hair? What if he thought she looked weird? What if everything was awful?

Then the power went out.

Pitch black. Someone screamed (playfully). A phone flashlight clicked on, then another. The whole party erupted into laughter. Jackson ended up next to her in the sudden darkness.

"Hey," he said. "I like your beanie."

"Thanks," Maya managed, her heart doing that weird fluttery thing. "It's covering a hair disaster. My brother's dog attacked me with a water bowl."

Jackson laughed, and his laugh was actually cute in person, not just in her imagination. "That's legendary. My dog once ate my homework. Literally. The teacher did NOT buy it."

They talked for twenty minutes in the semidark, while thunder cracked overhead and lightning flashed through the windows, illuminating everything in sudden bursts of white. Maya found herself not caring about her hair at all. They talked about music, about how weird sophomore year was, about how neither of them really fit into any particular friend group.

When the power finally came back on, Maya took off her beanie. Her hair was still frizzy. Still a mess. Jackson didn't even seem to notice.

"You know," he said, "I like your hair. It's got personality."

Maya smiled. Maybe perfect hair wasn't the point. Maybe the point was finding someone who liked you for the mess you actually were. Lightning struck somewhere close, and she jumped, but not away from him.
