Electric Fox Summer
Maya's palms were literally sweating as she stood in the corner of Jackson's backyard party. Her iPhone clutched tight in her hand, she scrolled through TikToks she'd already seen three times, trying to look busy. Casual. Like she wasn't hyper-aware of Lucas across the pool, wearing that shirt with the fox on it—a vintage find he'd bragged about in homeroom.
"Yo, Maya!" Her best friend Chen materialized with two solo cups. "Stop lurking and live a little."
"I'm not lurking," she protested, though her sweaty palms betrayed her. Chen shoved a cup into her hand.
Lightning cracked across the sky—weather app had said zero percent chance of rain. Typical. The party moved inside, crowded into Jackson's basement with its fairy lights and questionable beanbag chairs. Maya ended up squished next to Lucas on the couch.
His knee brushed hers. Electric. Maybe literally, with the storm outside.
"Cool fox shirt," she managed, internally screaming at how basic she sounded.
Lucas grinned. "Thrifted it. Matches my vibe, right?"
"Totally." The conversation flowed easier than she'd expected. They talked about nothing, everything—his vintage tee obsession, her horror movie addiction, how both their phones were at 15% and they refused to charge them because that would mean moving.
"Hey," Lucas said suddenly, "can I get your number? Like, for real this time?"
Her heart did that embarrassing thing where it felt too big for her chest. "Yeah. Definitely."
They exchanged phones, typing in numbers. His contact name would be "Lucas 🦊" obviously. Outside, thunder rolled. Inside, Maya felt something like lightning, but better—the kind that doesn't fade, just settles into your bones and makes you believe in impossible things.
She'd remember this night. The storm. The fox shirt. The way her palm stopped sweating when he smiled at her like she was someone worth noticing.
