Electric Fox

Maya stared at herself in the bathroom mirror, phone buzzing with incoming texts from the group chat. Everyone was asking if she was coming to Jordan's party tonight. Three weeks ago, she would've said yes without thinking. Now? Everything felt different after the breakup.

Her mom's voice carried through the hallway: "Maya, sweetie, did you see the weather? They're calling for storms."

"Yeah, Mom, I know," Maya called back, but she barely registered the words. Her focus was on the box of hair dye she'd bought on impulse. Copper Fox. The name felt like a sign.

The old Maya—perfect grades, perfect boyfriend, perfect life—would never do something this spontaneous. The new Maya, the one whose phone stayed suspiciously silent since Caleb dumped her over text, needed something to change.

She mixed the dye in the cracked plastic bowl, hands shaking slightly. Outside, the sky turned that weird purple-green color that meant serious weather incoming. Great metaphor much?

Her phone lit up again. A text from Caleb: "u coming 2nite? jordan asked"

Maya stared at the screen, something cold and determined settling in her chest. She wasn't that girl anymore. The one who waited to be invited, who showed up when summoned, who played by rules someone else wrote.

A flash of **lightning** illuminated the bathroom window, followed immediately by thunder that shook the mirror. Perfect.

She started applying the dye, section by section, watching her mousy brown transform into something bold and unignorable. This was her, now. Not Caleb's ex. Not the quiet girl in third period. Someone who made choices.

Forty minutes later, she rinsed out the dye and blew it dry. **Fox**-orange and impossible to miss. It looked amazing and terrifying and completely unlike her.

Her **hair** fell in copper waves around her face, a statement she didn't have to speak out loud. For the first time in weeks, her reflection looked like someone she actually wanted to be.

The group chat was still going. Maya typed: "yeah omw"

She grabbed her jacket, keys, and the confidence she'd been faking since the breakup. The storm outside matched the electricity in her veins. Tonight wasn't about showing Caleb what he'd lost. It was about finally meeting herself.
