Electric Dead

zombielightningspy

Maya sat in her car outside the industrial complex, rain drumming against the roof like accusations. In the passenger seat, the USB drive glowed with a faint blue light—seven years of proprietary research she'd just stolen from her employers. She was a corporate spy, a title that had sounded glamorous when the recruitment brochure promised six figures and international travel. Now it just meant she was a thief with a better wardrobe.

She felt like a zombie, honestly. The same routine: infiltrate, charm, extract, vanish. Her soul had been hollowed out by the number of times she'd smiled at people while secretly photographing their passwords, or had dinner with targets she secretly despised. The money didn't matter anymore. She had more than she could spend in three lifetimes.

Lightning cracked the sky open, a jagged scar of white that illuminated her face in the rearview mirror. She looked tired. Not the tired that coffee fixed, but the tired that came from realizing your entire adult life had been built on betraying people who'd never done anything to you.

Her phone buzzed. The handler, David. "Package secured? Extraction in twenty."

Maya watched the lightning reflect off the puddles in the parking lot. She thought about the researchers she'd spent three months befriending. Elena, who'd shown her photos of her daughter's graduation. Marcus, who'd talked her through his divorce over drinks. They'd trusted her.

Another lightning strike, closer this time. The thunder that followed shook the car.

Maya picked up the USB drive. Her thumb hovered over the door lock. She could drive to the extraction point, deposit the drive, and disappear with her eight-figure payout. Or she could walk back inside, return the drive, and probably spend the next decade in prison.

The zombie within her stirred—something that wanted more than to just exist, to consume and be consumed. Something that wanted to feel like a human being again.

She opened the car door into the rain.
