Electric Blue Midnight

Maya's hair had always been her safety blanket—long, dark, and perfectly controllable. Until the night she decided to dye it electric blue because Tyler said it would look "aesthetic as hell."

"You look like a smurf," her younger brother announced.

Maya burst into tears. This was supposed to be her glow-up era, not her meltdown era.

Her phone buzzed. Kai: "Pool. Now. Bring towels."

Kai had been her best friend since seventh grade, back when Maya still had braces and Kai had that unfortunate anime phase. Now they stood beside Maya's apartment complex pool at 11 PM, clutching hair dye remover.

"This is literally a disaster," Maya said, staring at her reflection in the dark water.

"It's iconic," Kai countered, already stripping down to their swim trunks. "Get in. We'll swim until your hair forgives you."

The water was shockingly cold against Maya's skin as she slipped in, still wearing her oversized t-shirt. They floated on their backs, watching storm clouds gather overhead.

"Tyler's gonna hate it," Maya whispered.

"Tyler thinks letting their pit hair grow is a personality trait," Kai snorted. "Their opinion is invalid."

Lightning cracked across the sky, turning the water silver for a heartbeat. Raindrops began to speckle the surface.

"We should go inside," Maya said, but neither moved.

Another flash of lightning illuminated them—Kai with their shaggy curls plastered to their forehead, Maya with her smurf-blue hair floating like seaweed around her face. They looked ridiculous. They looked perfect.

"Your hair," Kai said softly, "it's you. Blue hair, brown hair, no hair. You're still Maya."

Something cracked inside Maya's chest, warm and bright. Not the lightning. Something better.

"Race you to the deep end," she challenged.

They swam through the warm rain, the storm finally breaking overhead. Maya's blue hair streamed behind her like a banner, like a declaration, like she was finally, finally ready to be seen.

She didn't look like Tyler's aesthetic girlfriend anymore. She looked like herself.

Lightning flashed again, and Maya laughed, head thrown back, hair electric and wild and absolutely perfect.
