Electric Blue Confidence

Maya's frizzy **hair** had a mind of its own, especially when rain was coming. She could feel it in her bones—the humidity made each curl expand like a pufferfish defending itself. Today was picture day at Northwood High, and naturally, the sky looked like someone had spilled gray paint across a canvas.

"Your hair is... adventurous," her best friend Leo said tactfully as they walked toward school. Maya groaned. Adventures were for books, not for bangs that refused to stay flat.

Fifth period chemistry. Ms. Chen was droning about covalent bonds when Maya felt it—that static electricity prickle dancing across her scalp. Outside, a storm was brewing. **Lightning** flashed across the sky, illuminating the classroom in a ghostly white glow.

And then it happened. A bolt of static struck—literally. Maya reached for her beaker, and *ZAP*. A tiny but visible spark jumped from her finger to the metal equipment.

"Whoa," whispered Jordan, the cute junior who sat diagonal from her. "Did you just shoot lightning?"

Maya's face burned. Her hair, already voluminous from the humidity, now stood at odd angles from the static charge. She looked like a science experiment gone wrong.

"It's the weather," she mumbled, but Jordan was already grinning.

"That's actually kind of legendary."

After school, Maya hid in the bathroom, attempting to tame her wild mane with wet hands. Leo found her there and shoved a bottle into her hands. "My sister swears by these. They're like **vitamin** supplements, but for confidence."

"Vitamins for confidence? That's not real, Leo."

"Neither was shooting lightning from your fingertips this morning, yet here we are."

Maya laughed. She looked in the mirror—really looked—at the frizz, the volume, the chaos. Her hair was basically a thundercloud. Maybe that wasn't terrible. Thunderclouds were powerful. They commanded attention. They illuminated the sky.

She stepped out of the bathroom without fixing a single curl. Jordan was waiting by his locker.

"Hey Electric," he said, smiling. "Wanna study for finals together? My place, no lightning required."

Maya's hair poofed happily. Maybe wild was exactly who she was meant to be.
