Electric Blue at Midnight

poolzombielightning

The hotel pool was deserted at midnight, the water reflecting the distant storm like a shattered mirror. Elena sat on the edge, her legs submerged in the cool water, nursing a gin and tonic she'd carried down from their room. She'd come here to escape—the soft, accusing snore of her husband, the relentless email notifications, the feeling that she'd been moving through her life like a zombie for years now.

Behind her, the sliding door opened. She didn't turn. Mark's footsteps were familiar, heavy and uncertain on the concrete deck. He sat beside her, not touching her, close enough that she could smell the whiskey on his breath.

"You're missing it," he said quietly.

"Missing what?"

"The lightning. It's beautiful."

A brilliant fork of lightning shattered the sky, turning the pool momentarily electric blue. In that flash, she saw his face—gaunt, tired, the lines around his mouth deeper than she remembered. When had they both become so hollowed out?

"I feel dead sometimes," she admitted, the words escaping before she could stop them. "Like I'm just going through the motions. Waking up, commuting, working, coming home, sleeping. Repeat."

Mark reached for her hand underwater. His fingers were pruned, cold against hers. "I know," he said. "I've been watching you fade away. I've been fading too."

"What do we do?"

Another flash of lightning illuminated the pool's rippling surface. In that moment, she saw tears on his cheeks.

"We start swimming," he said. "Instead of just treading water."

She turned to him then, really looked at him for the first time in months. The storm was moving closer now, thunder rumbling like the earth itself was waking up. She squeezed his hand, then pulled him into the water with her.

They surfaced together, gasping, and lightning struck so close it turned the world white. For the first time in forever, Elena felt alive.
