Electric at Sunset

Maya's iphone buzzed in her pocket for the third time in five minutes. Another Instagram notification she didn't care about. She was hiding in Jordan's bathroom during what was supposed to be the party of the year, feeling like a total fraud. Everyone outside was living their best lives while she was having an existential crisis.

"You're taking forever in there!" someone yelled through the door. Maya ignored them. She caught her reflection in the mirror — hair frizzy from humidity, eyes scanning for flaws like her life depended on it. Why did coming to parties feel like performing in a play she hadn't rehearsed for?

The bathroom door swung open. Connor, the quiet guy from her English class, stood there looking equally awkward. "Sorry, I thought—" he started, then stopped. Then laughed.

"I'm hiding," Maya admitted suddenly. "From the zombie apocalypse out there."

"Same." He leaned against the doorframe. "Everyone's just... mindlessly doing their thing. It's weird, right? Like, why are we all pretending this is fun?"

Maya smiled. For the first time all night, her shoulders relaxed. Outside, music thumped and people laughed, but in here, something felt different. Real.

Then it happened — lightning flashed through the window, illuminating Connor's surprised expression. Thunder shook the house. The power died.

"Perfect," Connor said, pulling out his flashlight. "Wanna escape?"

They ended up on the back porch, watching the storm. Rain poured down like the sky was finally letting go of everything it had been holding back. Connor held his palm out, catching raindrops. Maya did the same. Their hands didn't touch, but something electric passed between them anyway.

"You know what's crazy?" Connor said. "I've been in classes with you for three years and I never knew you were this... real."

"You too," Maya said. And she meant it.

Her iphone buzzed again. She ignored it.

Some moments weren't meant to be captured. Some moments were just meant to be lived.
