Electric Aftermath

zombiespylightning

Marcus stood outside her apartment building for the third night in a row, feeling like the worst sort of spy—not the glamorous kind from films, but a pathetic creature stalking his own marriage. He'd followed her here after finding the hotel receipts, each one a paper knife twisting deeper into whatever remained of his trust. The rain had started an hour ago, cold and relentless.

Then came the lightning—a sudden, violent crack that turned the night sky white and illuminated her standing at the window, third floor, laughing at something someone else had said. Marcus's heart seized. He'd spent months walking through his life like a zombie, going through the motions of their marriage, his job, his existence, while she'd been slowly building another world. One that didn't include him.

The revelation hit him with the force of something finally breaking—the numbness that had protected him from suspicion, from asking the questions he'd been too afraid to voice. He wasn't dead inside, despite everything. He was just cowardly.

Another flash of lightning, and this time he saw both of them. The man's hand on her shoulder, familiar in a way that made Marcus's stomach turn. How long? Six months? A year? Had there been signs he'd ignored, zombie-blind and unwilling to see?

He should go up there. Should confront them. Should scream and break things the way people did in movies. But instead Marcus stood frozen in the rain, understanding with crystalline clarity that his marriage had died long before tonight. He'd been haunting its corpse, pretending there was still something to save.

The lightning showed him the truth—not about her, but about himself. He wasn't angry. He was relieved.

Marcus turned away from the window, from the ghost of a life he'd been living, and walked into the storm. For the first time in years, he felt entirely, painfully alive.
