Egyptian Summer at the Deep End

The community pool shimmered like something out of a TikTok filter, but inside? I was absolutely cooked. Standing by the snack bar in a swimsuit that felt two sizes too small while Maya held court with the popular crowd, laughing at jokes that weren't even funny. Just another Friday evening in suburban hell.

Then I saw it — the old playground equipment behind the parking lot, faded from decades of sun. A plastic sphinx with one eye missing, its riddle eroded by weather and time. Beside it, a pyramid slide that nobody used anymore. Some elementary school Egypt phase project abandoned by the parks department.

A calico cat materialized near the pool fence, orange and white patches glowing in the golden-hour light. It padded through the overgrown grass like it owned the place, tail held high, completely unbothered by the awkward social ecosystem fifteen yards away. I almost envied it.

My phone buzzed. 4%. Of course.

"Anyone have a charger?" I asked the group, voice cracking. Please don't let me sound desperate, please don't let me sound—

Marcus tossed me a tangled cable. "Good luck, it's kinda jank."

Our fingers brushed. His skin was warm from the sun, chlorine-scented, and my stomach did that embarrassing little flip it always did when he looked at me for three consecutive seconds. Thanks, anxiety. Thanks a lot.

"Thanks," I managed, plugging it in. The battery icon flashed red, then held steady at 6%.

"Hey," Marcus said, lowering his voice. "You wanna bail? Go check out that old playground? It looks weirdly cool."

I glanced at Maya, still performing for an audience that wasn't watching, then back at Marcus, who was actually looking at me. Like, really looking.

"Yeah," I said. "Yeah, I do."

And as we walked toward the weathered sphinx and her silent pyramid, with the cat trailing behind us like a tiny, furry chaperone, I realized something: sometimes the best riddles aren't the ones you solve. They're the ones you walk away from, with someone who wants to escape with you.
