Sarah sat at the edge of the pool, her legs dangling in the warm water, nursing her third gin and tonic. The corporate retreat had been three days of forced camaraderie and strategic planning sessions, but the real business always happened after hours, in shadows and whispers.

She ran her fingers through her hair — now loosened from its severe corporate updo — and thought about Marcus.

The palm trees surrounding the pool created dancing shadows across the water. Marcus had approached her earlier, his palm warm against her back as he leaned in to whisper something about "us" and "opportunities." Sarah knew exactly what kind of opportunities he meant: the kind that came with unspoken expectations, the kind that had advanced her career five years ago but left her hollowed out and regretful.

"I can't bear it again," she murmured to the empty darkness.

The pool lights reflected off the water, casting undulating patterns of blue and gold across her skin. Tomorrow she would decline the promotion Marcus was orchestrating for her — the one that required her personal investment beyond office hours. She would bear the professional consequences rather than the personal ones.

Her phone buzzed on the table. Another message from him. "Still up? Want to take a walk?"

Sarah watched the message pulse on her screen, then deleted it without responding. She stood up, water dripping from her legs, and grabbed her towel. The hair she'd spent twenty minutes perfecting this morning now hung messy and wild around her shoulders.

For the first time in five years, she felt like herself again.

The next morning, as she packed her suitcase, Sarah caught her reflection in the hotel mirror. The woman staring back looked tired but clear-eyed, resolved. She checked out early, declining the final brunch, and left without saying goodbye to Marcus or explaining her sudden departure to her colleagues.

Some exits, she decided, required no explanation at all.
