Drenched in Destiny

palmpoolhat

The pool party was already mid-swing when Maya arrived, baseball cap pulled low over her forehead. Freshly chopped bangs that her mom swore were "chic and modern" sat in awkward, jagged layers above her eyebrows. She'd spent all morning crying into her vanity mirror.

"Hey! You made it!" JJ called from the deep end, splashing water everywhere. "Come in!"

Maya's palms were already sweating against the hat's brim. She mumbled something about sunscreen and ducked toward the patio chairs.

That's when she saw her. Luna, the girl from AP Bio who sat in the back corner drawing in a leather notebook, was set up behind a folding table with a crystal ball and a sign: PALM READINGS — $2 OR YOUR DARKEST SECRET.

Luna looked up, sunlight catching in the oversized floppy hat that swallowed her messy bun. "First one's free for the nervous ones."

Maya froze. How did she—

"You're gripping that hat like it's a life raft," Luna said, tapping the chair in front of her. "Sit."

Something in Luna's voice made Maya sink into the folding chair. Luna took her hand, tracing lines across her palm with surprisingly gentle fingers. The pool noise faded into background static.

"You're hiding something," Luna murmured. "Something small that feels enormous."

Maya's throat tightened. "It's stupid."

"The best things always are." Luna looked up, eyes the color of pool water at twilight. "Haircut?"

Maya nodded, tears stinging.

Luna's mouth curved. "My sophomore year, I let my cousin cut my hair the night before picture day. I looked like a medieval peasant for three months straight. I wore hoodies in 90-degree weather."

Maya let out a surprised laugh. "Really?"

"Cross my heart." Luna reached up and tilted her own floppy hat forward. "This thing's been my security blanket ever since. Sometimes you just need your armor."

She squeezed Maya's hand. "Here's your future: These bangs will grow out. But you know what won't? The moment you realize nobody noticed what you were so worried about."

Maya glanced toward the pool. JJ and the others were laughing, playing chicken fight, completely unconcerned with her forehead.

"Now," Luna said, standing and grabbing a towel, "your destiny says you're about to get pushed into a pool fully clothed."

Before Maya could process, Luna shoved her chair backward. Maya splashed into the cool water, hat floating away, the worst hair day of her life suddenly hilarious.

Surfacing, she found Luna grinning from the edge, bareheaded and radiant. "Sometimes you just gotta jump in anyway."

And for the first time all day, Maya's palms were dry.
