Dog Paddle & Deep End
The chlorine stung my eyes as I hovered near the shallow end of Jordan's pool, nursing a lukewarm soda while everyone else acted like they'd been born in the water. Typical.
"Yo Tyler, you good?" called Maya, the human embodiment of sunshine and confidence. She did a casual backstroke, looking like she belonged in a sports commercial. I nodded, trying to look chill instead of like I was mentally calculating the distance to the snack table.
Swimming had never been my thing. Not when my mom signed me up for lessons at age five and I spent three weeks clinging to the wall like barnacle. Not now, at sixteen, when literally everyone else seemed to have mastered the art of not feeling like a drowning potato in front of their crush.
Then I saw it: Jordan's dog, a chaotic golden retriever named Buster, streaking toward the pool with the kind of energy that spelled disaster. Behind him, Jordan's little sister chased after, screaming something that sounded like "NO BUSTER THE CAT."
The cat.
Luna, the family's sleek black cat, had been peacefully sleeping on a lounge chair until Buster decided cat-pursuit would be his villain origin story. Luna bolted, scrambled up the nearest thing—which happened to be me—and dug her claws into my shoulder as she found safety on my head.
I stood there frozen, a cat perched on my head like some furry crown of humiliation, while everyone stared.
Then Jordan's dad, this massive bearded man who'd been manning the grill, let out the kind of belly laugh that echoes. "That's a heck of a hat, kid!"
Something about the absurdity broke me. I started laughing. Maya swam over, grinning. "Only you, Tyler. Only you would be the cat whisperer at a pool party."
"I'm basically a Disney princess," I said, finally wading deeper into the water, cat and all. "This is my woodland creature moment."
"Bear with it," Maya joked, and I groaned at the pun while everyone laughed.
And just like that, the weirdness that usually defined me became the thing that made me fit in. Who knew I'd have to literally wear a cat on my head to find my people?
