Dog Days and Deep Ends

Marcus stood at the edge of the pool, his heart doing that stupid fluttery thing that always happened when Skylar was around. She was laughing at something Tyler said, her hair dripping wet, perfect and effortless and completely out of his league.

"Yo, Marcus! You gonna stand there all day or actually swim?" Tyler called out. Classic Tyler—always had to be the center of attention, always had to make Marcus feel like the awkward new kid who'd moved here three months ago and still didn't know the social hierarchy.

His mom had been on this health kick lately, stuffing the fridge with spinach and kale and other rabbit food. "It'll clear your skin," she'd said that morning. Meanwhile, Marcus was pretty sure the green smoothie he'd choked down was just going to make him throw up in the pool.

He was about to take the plunge when chaos erupted. Buster—that's what his neighbor called her ancient, mostly-blind Labrador—had somehow escaped the backyard and crashed through the gate. The dog galloped toward the pool like she was on a mission, barking joyfully and sending lawn chairs flying.

Everyone screamed. Girls shrieked and scrambled out of the water. Tyler made a big show of being the hero, shouting "I got this!" while actually doing nothing useful.

But it was Skylar who moved first. She didn't freak out—she just waded over to where Buster was paddling confusedly near the shallow end, talking softly to the dog like it was the most natural thing in the world.

"Hey there, sweetie," Skylar said, gently guiding the dog toward the steps. "You're okay. Just a little swimming adventure, huh?"

Marcus felt something shift in his chest. This popular, perfect girl was being... real? Kind? Not performing for an audience?

"Need help?" he heard himself ask, wading in beside her.

She looked up, and for once, her smile actually reached her eyes. "Yeah, thanks. She's sweet—just confused."

Together they got Buster out, the dog shaking water everywhere like she'd just won the lottery. Tyler was still talking loudly about how he would've saved the day if Skylar hadn't "beat him to it," and Marcus realized: maybe Tyler was full of bull. Maybe the person everyone thought was perfect wasn't the one performing the hardest.

"Your dog?" Skylar asked, scratching behind Buster's ears.

"Neighbor's," Marcus said. "But I'm basically her favorite person."

She laughed—really laughed, not the fake giggle she gave Tyler's jokes. "I'm Skylar."

"Marcus."

The pool party continued, but something had changed. Marcus stopped worrying about whether his spinach-filled diet was working or if he was cool enough for Tyler's crowd. He was too busy talking to the only person who'd bothered to help a confused dog instead of performing for an audience.

Sometimes the best moments aren't the ones you plan. Sometimes they're just wet, chaotic, and completely unexpected.
