Diving Into the Pyramid

The pool party shimmered like a staged Instagram post. Pastel floats, palm trees swaying in the backyard, and everyone who was anyone floating through the chlorine-blue water. I stood at the edge, clutching my solo cup like it contained the secrets of the universe instead of lukewarm punch.

Emma's pool parties were legendary. They were also the apex of our school's social pyramid, and I was somewhere near the bottom, probably lodged between the kids who ate lunch in the library and the guy who collected specialty erasers.

"Hey! palm reader!" someone yelled.

My face burned. I'd mentioned my grandma's palm reading hobby exactly once in bio, and apparently that was my entire personality now.

Liam swam over, dripping water everywhere. He was a junior, on the lacrosse team, and had that annoyingly perfect hair that always looked like it had just been styled by a professional. "For real? Can you read mine?" He held out his hand, palm up, droplets sliding down his wrist.

The pyramid leaned in. Pretty girls with waterproof mascara. Guys with abs that had Instagram accounts. Everyone waiting for me to crash and burn.

I stared at his palm. "Uh, you're going to... trip? Soon?"

Dead silence. Then Liam burst out laughing. "Already did, in the cafeteria yesterday. Nice one."

Something shifted. The pyramid didn't crumble, but it... wobbled. People started holding out their palms, asking about crushes, college applications, whether they'd ever pass pre-calc. I made up increasingly ridiculous fortunes, and for the first time, nobody was looking at me like I was furniture.

Later, when someone cannonballed into the pool and sent a wave soaking my shoes, I didn't even care. I sat with Emma and her friends, discussing whether palmistry was legit or if I was just randomly guessing people's deepest fears.

"Maybe both," Emma said.

The social pyramid was still there. I wasn't suddenly at the top. But as I watched the water ripple under the moonlight, palm trees casting shadows across the deck, I realized something: pyramids have edges, but they also have room to sit back and enjoy the view.
