Diving Into the Deep End
Maya smoothed her hands down her shorts, her palms sweating like she'd been holding onto a climbing wall for way too long. The graduation party was in full swing - literally, since half her class was already in the pool.
She adjusted her beat-up dad hat, pulling it low over her forehead. It was her armor lately, hiding the fact that she barely recognized herself in the mirror anymore. College applications, friend group drama, the endless pressure to have everything figured out - sometimes she just wanted to disappear.
"Yo Maya, you gonna swim or what?" Jeremy called from the pool edge, doing that annoying thing where he splashed water everywhere.
She almost said no. Almost grabbed her phone to doomscroll instead - but that's when she realized her phone was dead. She'd forgotten her charging cable at home, and now she had no buffer, no escape hatch from actually being present.
"Yeah, hold on," Maya heard herself say.
Standing there in her swimsuit while everyone watched, she felt exposed in a way that had nothing to do with showing skin. The hat came off. Her dad's old Dodgers cap, the one she'd been hiding behind for months.
She dove in.
The water swallowed her whole, and suddenly she was just... swimming. No overthinking, no performance, just the rhythm of her strokes and the way her body knew exactly what to do. She'd been on swim team since middle school but had quit this year because it "wasn't cool anymore."
Breaking the surface, gasping, she found Jeremy actually looking impressed instead of mocking. "Okay, that was actually sick."
Her palm brushed against the pool edge as she pulled herself up, and Maya realized something wild - she could just be. Not the version of herself she thought everyone wanted, but the actual one. The one who loved swimming, who wore her dad's old hat, who didn't have her whole life mapped out.
"Teach me that flip turn thing?" Jeremy asked.
Maya laughed, tucking wet hair behind her ear. "Bet."
