Diving Into the Deep End
The Chandler High social pyramid was real, and Maya was definitely in the basement level. Maybe even the sub-basement. That's why when Brianna-the-Instagram-goddess herself invited her to the end-of-summer pool party, Maya almost said no. Almost.
Now she stood by the edge of Brianna's massive pool, clutching her iPhone like a lifeline. Her screen showed exactly zero new messages, because apparently her friends had better things to do than text her nervous breakdowns. The air smelled like coconut sunscreen and expensive perfume, the kind of vibes Maya only experienced through TikToks.
"Hey! You coming in or what?" It was Tyler, the guy Maya had been lowkey crushing on since algebra. He was already in the pool, wet hair plastered to his forehead, grinning like an idiot.
"Um, yeah, just," Maya stammered, "charging my phone real quick."
LAME. So lame. Even as the words left her mouth, she wanted to facepalm into oblivion.
"Bro, nobody cares about their phone at a party," Tyler called back, splashing water. "Just jump in already!"
And okay, maybe it was the heat wave that had everybody acting reckless. Maybe it was the way Tyler's eyes crinkled when he smiled. Or maybe Maya was just tired of watching life happen through a six-inch screen.
She set her iPhone on a table—face down, no less—and climbed onto the diving board. Her heart was doing that thing where it forgets how to rhythm properly. The social pyramid didn't matter right now. The pyramid of who sat where at lunch didn't matter. What mattered was the water, the stupid brave feeling bubbling in her chest, and the fact that for once, she wasn't going to ghost on herself.
"YOLO," Maya whispered, and jumped.
The cold hit her like beautiful chaos. Underwater, everything muffled into blue silence. When she broke the surface, sputtering and laughing, Tyler was there high-fiving her and Brianna was actually waving from across the pool and okay, maybe—just maybe—basement level wasn't so bad if you could still find your way to the deep end.
